Second Annual “Seeds of Love” Food Basket Appeal

“I was vulnerable and hungry, and you fed me and brought hope to my life. I would like to keep this light going by feeding 500 other vulnerable families in our village.”

12-year-old Abdoul, in reference to Journey House Actions

Season’s Greetings,

Food insecurity is a major problem for the most vulnerable children and young mothers living in rural Rwanda today.  COVID pandemic lockdowns, drought and now the war in Ukraine have dramatically increased food prices and stressed supply.

Fortunately, Journey House Actions (JHA), an apolitical, non-religious and non-profit organization located in Gashora, Rwanda, operates the “Seeds of Love” Food Basket Program that helps mitigate hunger among the children and families in their community.

These young people need your friendship and generous support now more than ever.  Your gifts keep the Food Basket Program running and available to those most experiencing hunger.

The Impact of Your Gifts

The Food Basket Program has greatly impacted the Gashora community.

JHA Food Basket Impact

  • 16 metric tons of rice, 7 tons of maize flour, and 5 tons of beans purchased each quarter
  • 305 students are fed two meals per day at JHA’s Norman & Marlyn Herrle Children’s Center
  • 200 to 300 non-students are fed one meal per day at JHA Children’s Center
  • Over 20 dairy cows provide 200 to 250 liters of milk per day
  • 6 acres of farmland are planted with cabbages, green peppers, onions, tomatoes & amaranths
  • The JHA Farm feeds over 1,100 community members
  • Provides daily wages & health insurance contributions to over 50 farm workers
  • The JHA Piggery creates opportunity for economic self-dependence for teens and young adults
  • Helped fund a full-time veterinarian
  • Reduced the malnutrition rate by over 80%

Eithode’s Story

Eithode is currently a resident of the JHA “Seeds of Love” Boys Home, which houses between 30 to 50 young boys who were experiencing homelessness.  There is a JHA Girls Home as well.  Eithode, like many of the other boys & girls at the “Seeds of Love” homes, was living on the streets sleeping in boxes, begging for food and subject to abuse.

These children often went two or three days without eating and suffered from malnutrition. A policeman found Eithode looking for food at the gates of a refugee camp and called JHA to pick him up and bring him to the JHA boys home.

Your support of the Food Basket Program gives children like Eithode the opportunity to eat nutritious food and attend school without being hungry.

“Now I have access to food, I drink milk and I sleep on a very good mattress.”

Eithode
